History The ship was originally launched in 1958 as Santa Rosa, it measured 20,000 tonnes. It sailed under this name for 13 years before it was laid up in port in 1971. It remained in port for twenty years before it was towed to Greece in 1991 for rebuilding as a cruise ship. It was substantially rebuilt and emerged, barely recognisable and now measuring 26,431 gross tonnes, although keeping its steam turbine engines. It sailed under Regency Cruises as the Regent Rainbow from 1992 until Regency Cruises went bankrupt in 1995. After this, the Regent Rainbow was sold to Louis Cruise Lines and was renamed Emerald. It was chartered to Thomson Holidays in 1997 and The was added before its name. Later on, in 2005, The Emerald received Thomson's new TUI colours. It will continue to sail under the Thomson fleet in 2008.
